A Special Global Circles Session on Artificial Intelligence

Global Circles October round continues the series of discussions on Artificial Intelligence by focusing on the theme “Exploring Artificial Intelligence: What it is, who it affects, and what do we change?”. The round includes an exclusive session with a very special keynote speaker Renée Cummings.

Professor Renée Cummings advocates for AI we can trust. She is on the frontline of ethical AI, generating real time justice-oriented solutions to the consequences of AI and the impacts of data and technology on society.

Professor Cummings, a 2023 VentureBeat AI Innovator Award winner, is an artificial intelligence (AI), data and tech ethicist, and the first data activist-in-residence at the University of Virginia’s (UVA) School of Data Science where she was named professor of Practice in Data Science. She is also a nonresident senior fellow at The Brookings Institution and a distinguished member of the World Economic Forum’s Data Equity Council. She is a criminologist, criminal psychologist, therapeutic jurisprudence specialist, and a community scholar at Columbia University. She serves as co-director of the Public Interest Technology (PIT) University Network, at UVA, and is on the board of advisors of the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs.

This special keynote session launches the exploration of the transformative potential of AI in driving productivity and growth - as well as the risks related to algorithmic bias in decision-making and increased inequalities and digital divides. The dialogue will address how the development of AI transmits between global regions and power structures and will delve into the relationship between the Global North and South in developing AI, from its design to its applications. It will also consider how advances in AI have influenced our understanding of what it means to be human - especially in terms of creativity and consciousness.

The October round runs from October 9th until October 20th. To join, apply HERE.
