Start with self-awareness

Identities are at the core of dialogue. Through exploring identities, people develop greater self-awareness and critical thinking, becoming more conscious of how they relate to others and communicate within diverse groups.

Soliya's dialogue model encourages participants to explore their identities, practice self-reflection, and understand how different aspects of their identities influence their communication.

Differences and Identities

Effective communication with others begins by first knowing yourself.

Some differences matter more than others and affect us in unique ways. While some resonate with our core identity, shaping how we understand ourselves and the world, others seem less significant.

The most important elements that make you who you are - the elements of yourself that are MOST important to YOU.

How you listen and interact in different settings can be greatly shaped by the aspects of your identity.

  • If we are not mindful of identities that are active and present in our discussion, we leave the communication open for breaking down in multiple ways.

  • Understanding identities enables authentic communication where challenging, even polarizing topics can be safely explored with openness and curiosity.

  • Most importantly, awareness of identities and their role is an incredibly important opportunity to learn.

How can this type of communication be transformed into learning?

  • The key is consistent active listening, even when it is hard!

  • Use the foundational communication toolbox to support active listening

  • Be mindful of the emotions involved

Dialogue ensures the continuation of communication

Identity threat happens when an element of one's identity is perceived or felt by oneself as unwelcome, uncommon, unsafe, different, or judged. In interactions, like teams or other groups, identity threats may change one's behaviour, mental, emotional and physical states, as well as one’s reactions in the situation.

Dialogue is about reducing identity threat to enable active listening and promote understanding and critical awareness. It enables a meaningful exploration of differences among the group - dialogue continues the communication.
